Pannelli con rilievi d'armi | Panels with weapons
The fragments of the weapons panels were found during the excavation the area of the Basilica Ulpia, whose façade overlooking the square depicted the celebration of the Dacian wars and the exaltation of the victorious army. The decoration of the façade attic was made up of Dacian prisoners’ statues alternating with panels representing weapon stacks and holding a crowning with inscriptions in honor of the legions. About 400 fragments of white marble of Luni were found. They were characterized by a high quality artistry and a variety of weapons and armor. The repertoire of the panels uses motifs of Greek-Hellenistic and Macedonian origin and presents references to the architectural decoration of the forum, especially in the decoration of the shields. Armors, tunics, helmets, various weapons and their containers, military donations, banners and musical instruments are carved on oval and round shields, sometimes overlapping.
